Mr. Speaker, we are pleased to see the NDP joining us in the fight to protect the Canada pension plan. Actually, one of the very first things we did in government, about six months in, was strengthen the Canada pension plan for future generations.
We will continue to stand against Conservatives, who for decades have been railing against the Canada pension plan. Indeed, the plan by Alberta to dismantle the Canada pension plan and put at risk the pensions of millions of Albertan seniors is absolutely irresponsible.
We will continue to stand in defence of the Canada pension plan and we look forward to standing with all members of the House in doing just that.

Mr. Speaker, once again, we see how badly the leader of the Conservative Party wants to pick a fight.
We are here to invest to support vulnerable Canadians, whether it is with dental care or child care spaces. We are here to invest in our seniors and to protect their pensions when he attacks the pension plan. We are here to help Canadians every step of the way. We will always put the most vulnerable Canadians first.

Mr. Speaker, for the past eight years, we have been there for seniors with investments to increase their pensions. We have been there for the most vulnerable seniors with programs that have given them help and support in their communities. We have invested in housing for seniors. We will continue to be there for seniors.
During COVID-19, we were there to support small business and help entrepreneurs, and we are going to continue to be there. I look forward to sharing the contents of the fall economic statement with my hon. colleague, but he will have to wait a few more hours.

Mr. Speaker, it is a relevant question because we have taken actions in the past to claw back transfers to provinces that have not been obeying the Canada Health Act, and we will continue to do that. Let me be clear. We will always defend Canada's access to health care and will not hesitate to use all available tools under the Canada Health Act to protect this right. We expect all provinces and territories to adhere to the act when they make decisions regarding Canadians' access to health care.
The Minister of Health will be closely reviewing the details of the Alberta premier's plan, but we remain unequivocal that when it comes to access to our health care system and access to pension supports, we will always stand with Canadians.

Mr. Speaker, I thank the member for Dorval—Lachine—LaSalle for her important question and for her work with seniors.
When it comes to seniors, we are proud of our track record since 2015. Instead of raising the retirement age, we decided to keep it at 65. We increased the guaranteed income supplement. We enhanced the Canada pension plan. We increased old age security.
Older Canadians remember the Harper years, and this is exactly where they would end up again under the Conservative Party. We cannot run that risk.

Mr. Speaker, if the hon. member actually cared about seniors, he would not have been part of the government that raised the retirement age, driving seniors further into poverty. We brought it back to 65. We continued to step up with supports for seniors, and we are going to continue to stand to defend their pensions as well. While his Conservative colleagues are attacking the CPP, he has finally realized that perhaps the CPP is a good thing and has come out in defence of it. This is after a decade of attacking seniors and their pensions, of attacking the CPP. We are going to continue unequivocally to stand to support seniors right across the country, unlike the Leader of the Opposition.

Mr. Speaker, we understand that many people, including seniors, are struggling, but it is not true that we have not been there for the past eight years, on the contrary.
We increased old age security by 10% for seniors aged 75 and over. We increased Canada pension plan benefits. We increased the guaranteed income supplement for single seniors. We made high-speed Internet more affordable for vulnerable seniors. We doubled the GST tax credit, which helped seniors.
We will continue to be there for seniors. We will continue to be there to support them through these difficult times. We know that is how we will get through them together.

Mr. Speaker, the Conservatives are always preaching austerity and budget cuts to employment insurance and pensions for seniors.
We will continue to be there not only to support Canadians with measures such as doubling the GST credit, help for dental care for children or help for low-income renters, measures the Conservatives oppose, but we are also there to create an economy that works for everyone, with investments in a future that is greener and more prosperous for all workers.

Mr. Speaker, I know we are all astonished to hear the Leader of the Opposition miss an opportunity to stand up for the rights and freedoms of workers. That is something we expect him to continue to do, alongside all of us in the House, in condemning the pre-emptive use of the notwithstanding clause.
On top of that, he is also talking about cuts to EI. When he criticizes us for being there and ensuring that EI and CPP are there for workers into the future, he calls that tax increases.
We are going to be there to support people paying for EI. We are going to be there to support people with their pensions. We are going to be there for dental and rental; he is not.

Mr. Speaker, our investments to support Canadians through the pandemic, our investments to support them right now with the GST credit that will help families with hundreds of dollars at a moment they need them, to support low-income families pay for rent, to support low-income families with help for dental care, these are the things that will make a difference right now in the way we move forward. The Conservatives are talking about cuts to EI, cuts to pensions and taking money away from Canadians by ending the climate action incentives that has most Canadians far better off with the investments we are making to fight climate change.

Mr. Speaker, while the Conservatives continue to talk about cutting services that Canadians rely on, such as EI and pensions, we will be there to help vulnerable Canadians and invest in the middle class, and we will continue to fight climate change. We know that investing in the fight against climate change is the best way to build a robust economy with opportunities for everyone in the coming years. That is exactly what we will continue to do. The Conservatives may encourage us to cut services for Canadians, but we are not going to do that.

Mr. Speaker, the good news is that seniors are now living much longer and healthier lives than they did decades or generations ago.
That is a good thing, but it means that too many seniors run out of pension and savings before they die. We recognize that, starting at the age of 75, seniors have greater needs, and that costs more. That is why we have chosen to increase old age security for all seniors 75 and up. Our goal is to provide an appropriate level of support to those in greater need.
