Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister is going to turn public buildings and land into housing. I wonder where he got that idea.
Let me quote, “We will conduct an inventory of all available federal lands and buildings that could be repurposed, and make some of these lands available at low cost for affordable housing”. That is from his 2015 platform.
Now, nine years later, he can only point to 13 homes on those public lands. Yesterday, he promised a “rapid review” of all the federal land portfolios. How rapid, another nine years?

Mr. Speaker, there seems to be a problem with the microphone. The Prime Minister did not hear the question.
There are 37,000 federal buildings, six million-plus square metres, that could be converted into housing, not to mention thousands of acres of federal land. The Prime Minister agreed that could be done because he promised it eight years ago. After eight years of doubling housing costs, can he tell us how many homes have been created by repurposing federal buildings and lands? I would like just the number, please.

The Prime Minister promised, eight years ago, that he would repurpose some of that space to create homes. How many have been created?

Mr. Speaker, eight years ago, the Prime Minister promised in his 2015 platform that he would “[repurpose] all available federal lands and buildings...at low cost for affordable housing in communities where there is a pressing need”.
Can the Prime Minister tell us how many homes have resulted from repurposing these buildings and lands?

Mr. Speaker, actually, I delivered housing costs that were half of what they are right now. Those are the results. Sometimes we have to fight for the people, the common people, and rely on the common sense of the common people to get things done.
Right now, we have the biggest housing bubble in the G7 even though we have the most land per capita to build on. The solution is to incentivize municipalities to speed up permits so that we can build more homes.
Why does the Prime Minister not link the number of dollars cities get for infrastructure to the number of houses they allow to get built, require every federally funded transit station to have housing around it and sell off federal buildings to build homes that people can afford?

Mr. Speaker, I am sorry, but sometimes I even crack myself up here.
The Prime Minister is presiding over a 37,000-building empire with these big, ugly, largely empty buildings. Why does he not sell off 15%, which is 6,000 buildings, so we can convert them into affordable housing for our young people so they can actually have a roof over their head and a place to call home?

Mr. Speaker, the difference is that, like housing, we actually got it built. What I am proposing is not to dream about housing around transit, but to actually require every single federally funded transit station be pre-approved for high-density housing so our young people and our seniors can live right next to the bus and train.
He does not like that idea, but how about this one? He has 37,000 buildings, many of them largely empty, big, ugly buildings. Why does he not sell off 15% of them so we can convert those into affordable housing for our young people?
