Madam Chair, I thank my colleague for his speech. We were both members of the committee that must not be named. It was very interesting. What struck me was how we, as Canadians, take our safety here in Canada for granted. We have welcomed more than 100 Ukrainian families to Châteauguay—Lacolle, and they are fitting right in. These wonderful people work in our communities, and we are happy to have them. In his speech, my colleague said that NATO should maybe have intervened sooner following the Russian invasion. I would like him to expand on that. Does he think Canada was ready to send troops to Ukraine?

Mr. Speaker, I would like to pay a final tribute to the hon. Ian Watson, who left us on April 2 at the age of 88. Mr. Watson sat in the House of Commons from 1963 to 1984 in the governments of Lester B. Pearson, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Joe Clark and John Turner. He was elected seven times, first in the riding of Châteauguay—Huntington—Laprairie, then Laprairie and, finally, Châteauguay. During his political career, he was parliamentary secretary for a number of departments, including National Revenue and Urban Affairs. A great optimist, Ian Watson believed in the power of politics to make lasting and positive changes in people's lives. I offer my sincere condolences to the Watson family, to his many friends who sat in the House and to all of his constituents, whom Mr. Watson represented energetically throughout his political career.

Madam Speaker, this week the war in Ukraine marked its 70th day. We stand with the Ukrainian people. I want to take this opportunity to highlight the generosity, compassion and empathy Canadians have shown towards families fleeing the atrocities of this war. I want to highlight the engagement of the Châteauguay—Lacolle community. At the outset of the war, organizations and individuals in the greater Châteauguay area came together to form a Ukraine welcoming committee. Led by the wonderful Nicoleta Caraulan and 20 or so helpers, our volunteers are already preparing to welcome even more Ukrainian families to our area.
