Mr. Speaker, after eight years of this Prime Minister, he is not worth the cost. The wasteful spending has spiralled out of control. Members will recall the $116 million spent on consultants at McKinsey, the $54 million on ArriveCAN and the $6,000 per night for a hotel room. Today we learned that the government wasted $8 million on a barn. How can the government spend $8 million on a barn on the Governor General's property when food banks are in such desperate need? Is spending $8 million on a barn on the grounds of the Governor General's residence really the Liberals' priority?

Mr. Speaker, if the Prime Minister were serious, he would listen to the majority of members of the House. Yesterday, David Johnston had one thing to do to convince Canadians, just one. He had to demonstrate, without a shadow of a doubt, that there is no conflict of interest between him and the Prime Minister. He failed miserably in that task by confirming, one after another, all of the perceived conflicts of interest that make it impossible for the House and Canadians to put their confidence in him. When will the Prime Minister finally do the honourable thing? When will he put his friend, the former governor general, out of his misery and dismiss him from his position as independent special rapporteur?

Madam Speaker, I have seen the facts. David Johnston is a former governor general. He was granted the “Right Honourable” title for the role he played on behalf of Canada. All governors general are well aware that Parliament, especially the House of Commons, is the people's House. There is nothing very honourable about seeing the Prime Minister use a former governor general like his puppet to protect himself from a public inquiry that has been demanded twice now by a majority of members who represent Canadian citizens. The Prime Minister is the one who got David Johnston into this mess. When is he going to get him out of it by firing him?

Mr. Speaker, last night the special rapporteur admitted it himself. The Prime Minister gave him his mandate and he could care less about the vote in the House of Commons. I would like to quote from Le Journal de Montréal: …Mr. Johnston has obviously become Justin Trudeau's adviser.... As he understands it, his role is to protect his boss, the Prime Minister…even if it means sacrificing his career and the reputation that goes with it. This was written today by Yasmine Abdelfadel in her column entitled “Democracy's new enemy is David Johnston”. The Conservatives are not the ones saying this. When is the Prime Minister finally going to put the former governor general out of his misery by ending this charade and launching an independent public inquiry?
