Madam Speaker, I rise just to give recognition to the hon. member for Mission—Matsqui—Fraser Canyon. He seems to have a certain je ne sais quoi, a certain flair that the hon. member for Lévis—Lotbinière seems to have. I have appreciated that in his delivery of petitions. It seems to me, based on his speech, that he has a newfound passion for an elected Senate, one that has mixed member proportional representation, one that allows for true democracy to happen. I would love to hear the member talk about ways in which we can make the Senate more accountable, beyond the patronage appointments of the past Conservative and Liberal governments.

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to rise today to present three petitions. The first petition, e-petition 3974, has been signed by Canadians across the country and highlights the fact that even though cannabis is legal in Canada, far too many people remain penalized for historic cannabis convictions. These historic convictions disproportionately impact people from marginalized communities and have negative consequences on their ability to work, find housing and travel outside the country. This petition recognizes that cannabis-related pardon programs fail to remedy these concerns and, thus, calls upon the government to follow the lead of jurisdictions like New York and immediately table legislation that would provide automatic expungement for all Canadians living with non-violent cannabis convictions.

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to rise today to present three petitions. The first, e-petition 3668, initiated by Joel DeBellefeuille and supported by Canadians from across the country, addresses the critically important need to end racial profiling. Racial profiling is a degrading and racist practice affecting too many people in Canada, and even the Supreme Court has acknowledged that systemic racial profiling by police occurs as a day-to-day reality for Black and indigenous Canadians. This petition calls upon the Minister of Public Safety to enact legislation that would prohibit racial profiling by police and make federal funding to law enforcement agencies dependent on those agencies having policies and procedures in place to end racial profiling.
