Ontario Bill 120

43rd Parl. 1st Sess.
June 01, 2023
  • This bill, called the Liability for Climate-Related Harms Act, is about holding coal, oil, and gas producers responsible for the damages caused by climate change. It recognizes that climate change is real and is already affecting people's lives in Ontario through events like wildfires and flooding. The bill aims to ensure that these producers contribute their fair share to pay for the harm caused by their products and to prevent future harm. It establishes strict liability for climate-related harms, meaning that any entity engaged in the production of fossil fuels and emitting greenhouse gases will be held responsible for the damages that occur in Ontario. The bill also allows for the consideration of scientific information and historical experience in determining the damages caused by climate change. The Lieutenant Governor in Council has the power to make regulations related to determining greenhouse gas emissions and the detectability of a producer's emissions. The bill will come into force once it receives Royal Assent and is titled the Liability for Climate-Related Harms Act, 2023.

Ontario Bill 12

43rd Parl. 1st Sess.
August 25, 2022
  • This is a law called the Ending Automobile Insurance Discrimination in the Greater Toronto Area Act, 2022. It aims to prevent discrimination in automobile insurance rates in the Greater Toronto Area. Currently, people in Ontario pay the highest automobile insurance rates in Canada, and some pay more for insurance than their mortgage. The law wants to end the practice of using postal codes to determine insurance rates, as it leads to high premiums. The law prohibits insurers from using risk classification systems that consider the geographic region where a person lives as a factor in determining rates. It also prohibits insurers from offering different rates based on different municipalities or areas within the Greater Toronto Area. The law defines the Greater Toronto Area as the City of Toronto and the regional municipalities of Durham, Halton, Peel, and York. The law will come into effect once it receives Royal Assent.
