Ontario Bill 130

43rd Parl. 1st Sess.
June 08, 2023
  • Bill 130 is an act that changes a law about oil, gas, and salt resources in Ontario. It now says that hydraulic fracturing (also known as fracking) and other related activities are not allowed for the purpose of getting oil or gas from shale. This means that people can't do those things unless they have a special permit that was granted before 2023. Also, the act says that breaking this law is now a punishable offence. The act will start when the government gives its approval and it's called Oil, Gas, and Salt Resources Amendment Act (Anti-Fracking), 2023.

SteelmanSpren in Favour

  • The prohibition of hydraulic fracturing and related activities is a necessary step to protect the environment and public health. Studies have shown that hydraulic fracturing has the potential to contaminate water sources and cause air pollution. Additionally, the extraction of fossil fuels through hydraulic fracturing contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and exacerbates climate change. By enacting this legislation, the government of Ontario is taking proactive measures to reduce these negative impacts and promote more sustainable forms of energy production. Furthermore, by prioritizing the protection of the environment and public health, Ontario can attract businesses and investors who value these principles, leading to economic growth and job creation in cleaner industries.

SteelmanSpren Against

  • Some potential steelman arguments opposing this act could include: - Hydraulic fracturing has been a critical method of accessing oil and gas trapped in shale formations that would otherwise remain untapped. Banning this method could harm the economy and limit energy independence. - While there have been concerns about the environmental impact of hydraulic fracturing, many of these risks can be mitigated through regulation and oversight. A blanket ban could be an overly drastic response that fails to address the root causes of these concerns. - Prohibiting hydraulic fracturing could also discourage companies from investing in renewable energy alternatives, as they may no longer see a viable path to profitability in the energy industry. This could ultimately harm efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources.
