Bill S-272

44th Parl. 1st Sess.
October 03, 2023
  • This bill is an amendment to the Director of Public Prosecutions Act, which deals with who is responsible for prosecuting certain crimes. The amendment specifies that if a First Nation (a group of Indigenous people in Canada) creates a law for minor crimes, the Director of Public Prosecutions will handle the prosecution of those crimes unless the First Nation already has a prosecutor or an agreement with a provincial or territorial government for the prosecution of those crimes. Essentially, this bill is about making sure First Nations have a say in the prosecution of minor offenses under their own laws.

44th Parl. 1st Sess.
September 21, 2023
  • This bill, called the National Thanadelthur Day Act, designates the 5th day of February each year as "National Thanadelthur Day." Thanadelthur was a young Denesuline woman who played a crucial role in the fur trade in the early 1700s. She helped make peace between the Denesuline and Cree peoples and her story sheds light on the important contributions of Indigenous women. National Thanadelthur Day is not a legal holiday.

Bill S-218

44th Parl. 1st Sess.
November 15, 2022
  • This bill, known as S-218, proposes an amendment to the Department for Women and Gender Equality Act. The amendment would require the Minister for Women and Gender Equality to examine potential effects of certain bills and amendments on women, particularly Indigenous women, and report those effects to Parliament. The aim of this amendment is to ensure that legislation and proposed changes take into consideration the impact on women and promote gender equality. The bill also includes provisions for the timely tabling and publication of these reports. It is important to note that these requirements would only apply to bills introduced in Parliament six months after the bill receives royal assent.
