Mr. Speaker, Anna Marguerite Ruff, known as Peggy, born August 7, 1922, passed away on September 10 at the young age of 100. She was number nine of 11 kids, mother of five, grandmother of 14, great-grandmother of 23 and great-great-grandmother of one. I could easily talk about grandma for hours, and I have. She was legendary across the Canadian Armed Forces, including Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq. I asked family to give me one word to describe her and here are some of those words: applesauce; stellar; tenderhearted; honest; funny; strong; feisty; clever; unforgettable; caring; tomato soup, and that is world famous; and family. Grandma played golf into her 80s and was a huge Toronto Blue Jays fan. She loved cribbage and was a provincial champion just shy of her 95th birthday, even though she was legally blind. Grandma made a huge impact on a lot of different organizations in the community. Whether it was the ladies’ auxiliary, the legion, different church groups, seniors or many more, grandma was respected by all. She was stubborn, a trait she clearly passed onto her children. Thankfully, it skipped a generation and her grandkids did not inherit it. However, I can attest first-hand that her great-grandchildren did. I love my grandma. Her whole family loves her. She will be missed.

Mr. Speaker, early Friday morning, four cadets at the Royal Military College died in a tragic accident when the vehicle they were in entered the water off Point Frederick. Fourth-year officer cadets Jack Hogarth, Andrei Honciu, Broden Murphy and Andrés Salek all voluntarily joined the Canadian Armed Forces understanding that they may be required to make the ultimate sacrifice in service to Canada. Losing a member of the Canadian Armed Forces is never easy to accept for family and friends, but losing someone in an accident just a few short weeks before graduation is that much harder. I do not know the personal details of all the families, although Officer Cadet Broden Murphy was the son of a fellow class of 1997 classmate of mine, Major Dave Murphy, and his wife, Stephanie. I cannot imagine the pain and loss they and all the families are currently feeling. On behalf of all members of the House, I offer Dave, Stephanie, and all the families and friends of Jack, Andrei, Broden and Andrés, my deepest condolences and sympathy. I ask all members and all Canadians to keep them all in their thoughts and prayers. “Truth. Duty. Valour.” Lest we forget.

Mr. Speaker, I struggled in deciding what to focus my statement on today. I could easily spend a minute talking about the loss of my uncle Morley Kaufman; the loss of retired Colonel John Fife, a great friend, mentor and leader from Oromocto, New Brunswick; or the loss of World War II veteran Charles Fisher from Owen Sound, among the many others whom we have lost over the last couple months. I could do a full statement in recognition of Dr. Kelly Barratt, a local veterinarian who was the first woman bovine practitioner of the year, as awarded by the American Association of Bovine Practitioners this past October. She is one of only three Canadians to win the award this century. I could do a full statement thanking the member for Durham for his service, leadership and dedication as the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada. However, in the end, I will end my statement by simply asking all members of the House and all Canadians watching to please respect each other. The pandemic has been hard on everyone. We should treat each other as we want to be treated ourselves. Also, Wiarton Willie predicts it is going to be an early spring.
