Mr. Speaker, in British Columbia, two people died, and one is still missing at sea because their vessel could not be found. It was discovered that life-saving, direction-finding technology has been unavailable. Those on the water deserve to know that help will be there to find them. However, instead of investing in the safety of people, the Liberals followed the lead of the Conservatives, slashing funding and closing 10 Coast Guard communication centres. Canadians deserve better. When will the government provide the Coast Guard with the necessary resources to keep mariners safe?

  • Re: Bill C-39
Mr. Speaker, the bill, at this point, is necessary for us to ensure that we are protecting the most vulnerable. To me, and to many of us, as we are hearing, it speaks to a bigger issue: The government is leaving many behind. I appreciate that my colleague spoke to the importance of closing the social safety net and spoke about the importance of disability supports, appropriate mental health supports, affordable housing and a guaranteed livable basic income. There are many components necessary for us to move forward to address the bigger issue. I wonder if the member can share with us what he is hearing from constituents in his riding regarding what is most vital for us to move forward with so that those who are struggling the most have what they need to get through each day.

Madam Speaker, I thank the member for Dorval—Lachine—LaSalle for introducing this bill to make the justice system more sensitive, responsive and safe for women and children. I spoke to a constituent just last week about her experience in the court system and the many ways in which she and her children did not feel safe. I am wondering if the member could share with constituents in my riding of Nanaimo—Ladysmith, and the constituent I spoke with, what would be the first, most important piece to help increase safety for women and children as a result of this bill passing. I would also like to express my full support for this bill.
