Madam Speaker, New Democrats want to make voting easier and more accessible for Canadians. That is why we pushed the government to make changes to the electoral reform bill. However, the government has proposed changing the election date, allowing 80 additional MPs to qualify for a pension. Canadians are struggling with high costs. They do not want politicians to make laws for their own financial gain. New Democrats will introduce an amendment to keep the original election date. Will the government support it?

Madam Speaker, I thought perhaps I had not followed a parliamentary rule of some sort. As it turns out, it was a chance to deflect from the truth, which is the voting record of the Liberals in not moving forward on electoral reform and strengthening our democracy. I appreciate this motion and the need for changes to be made, but let us take a moment to reflect on the work required ahead and commit together to make real changes, to listen to the needs of Canadians and to implement the necessary solutions. I cannot reiterate enough that we no longer have time to wait.

Mr. Speaker, as the member knows, and he spoke about this, first nations, Métis and Inuit continually have to go through the court system to have their rights recognized, including with this bill. It is tragic that people would need to go through the court system to have their basic rights met. It sounds like the member agrees it is unfair for indigenous people to need to go through this court system to have their rights recognized. I am wondering what the member would suggest we change about Canada's political and legal system so indigenous people no longer need to do this.

Mr. Speaker, I agree with so much that was said in the intervention by the member for Saanich—Gulf Islands today, again reinforcing the many reasons that we need to be moving forward with these changes to the Judges Act, getting this bill to committee and moving forward on what we are all agreeing on today. I may be new in this role as a member of Parliament, but I cherish every moment to stand up and speak in this chamber, and I hope that never changes. I reflect on the fact that our time may not be being used in the most efficient way right now. We have so much that is happening. I am hearing from constituents who are worried about the climate crisis that we are in and are struggling to make ends meet, and I am wondering if the member can share a bit about how she feels about using our time in the best way possible to speak to the concerns that we are hearing from constituents day in and day out.
