Mr. Speaker, after nine years of the NDP-Liberal Prime Minister, more Canadians are hungry and homeless. The government promised to end chronic homelessness in Canada by 2030. The Parliamentary Budget Officer found homelessness is getting worse, with chronic homelessness up 38%. The vast majority of homeless individuals in Canada, 80%, are homeless based purely on affordability reasons. The Prime Minister is just not worth the cost. How can the government spend so much with such failing results?

Mr. Speaker, it is interesting that the NDP-Liberal government always wants to talk about anything other than the fact that people cannot afford to pay for basic necessities. We have nurses and construction workers who are living in their cars in British Columbia. We know that this is across the country. We know that there are tent cities across this country, because people cannot afford the basic necessities they need to live. Reports came out just this morning about how close seniors are to being homeless. The government has created this problem with high inflation, which has also created high interest rates. This is creating higher mortgage payments for people, putting them on the edge and out of their homes. The government should be focusing on policies and legislation that can actually stop what is creating this situation, where people cannot even afford basic necessities in this country.

Madam Speaker, after eight years of the Liberal government, violent crime is up 32%, and our most vulnerable citizens are some of the most impacted. People are in desperate situations, without being able to afford basic necessities, with high inflation, with rent costs doubling, and with mental health and addiction issues rising. It was just yesterday, in the House, that I spoke about the issue of homelessness being on the rise and safety concerns surrounding homeless encampments. This morning, we heard about the death of a woman following a reported shooting at a tent encampment in Peterborough. When will the government take public safety seriously?

Mr. Speaker, residents of Kelowna—Lake Country are increasingly disturbed by a Liberal government, propped up by the NDP, that does not seem to care that homelessness is on the rise. After eight years of the Liberal government, rents and the cost of owning a home have doubled, inflationary policies have poured fuel on the inflationary fire, interest rates are high and local food banks have 30% more people reaching out for help. Encampments have now become common sights across the country, including in my community, but when I asked the housing minister what he thought about the average rent in Kelowna being over $1,900 a month, he said “it does not matter”. Instead of addressing crushing inflation and building homes, these left-wing Liberal and NDP politicians would rather defend people's living in tents. This creates safety issues for the greater community with potential fires and crime, and leaves vulnerable people to live in unsafe conditions where criminals prey on them. An Auditor General's report noted that the federal government does not even know whether its billions of dollars spent have improved outcomes for people experiencing homelessness or chronic homelessness, or for other vulnerable groups. Every Canadian deserves a safe place to call home.

Mr. Speaker, the point is that people cannot afford food right now. They cannot afford to put fuel in their vehicles. We have reports of students living in homeless shelters. We know that the stats for food banks are up across the country. This is the state we are in right now. People cannot even afford their basic necessities. Now is not the time to increase anything, during this 40-year-high inflation, that will further stop people from being able to afford even the basic necessities.
