Bill S-13

44th Parl. 1st Sess.
February 26, 2024
  • Bill S-13 aims to amend the Interpretation Act to ensure that Acts of Parliament and regulations uphold the Aboriginal and treaty rights of Indigenous peoples recognized by section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982. The bill also repeals similar provisions in other Acts, known as non-derogation clauses. The amendments clarify that these Acts do not abrogate or derogate from the rights of Indigenous peoples. The bill includes coordinating amendments related to other Acts that may come into force. This bill seeks to affirm and protect the rights of Indigenous peoples in Canada.
