Mr. Speaker, the carbon tax works only if it is politically expedient.
The Prime Minister's carbon tax exemption does not help 97% of Canadians who are already struggling to put food on the table and heat their homes. Now we have a Liberal minister from Newfoundland and Labrador telling Albertans that the only reason they are not getting an exemption is they did not vote Liberal.
Are the Liberal minister from Edmonton Centre and the Liberal MP for Calgary Skyview not defending Alberta families? Are they not defending the 81% of their constituents who rely on natural gas to heat their homes and will not get a carbon tax exemption?
Will those Liberal MPs from Alberta stand in the House, defend their constituents and admit their Prime Minister is not the worth the cost?

Mr. Speaker, an election must be in the air because the Prime Minister has announced his re-election campaign: Vote Liberal, and in three years they are going to quadruple the carbon tax on home heating, gas and groceries. After eight years, the Prime Minister is in a panic mode because he knows his NDP-Liberal government is not worth the cost.
Now we have a Liberal minister from Long Range Mountains in Newfoundland and Labrador admitting that only Canadians who vote Liberal will get an exemption from the carbon tax. What about the Liberal minister from Edmonton Centre or the Liberal MP for Calgary Skyview? Were these MPs so incompetent and so out of touch that they could not secure an exemption to the carbon tax for Albertans?

Mr. Speaker, the number one concerns for Canadian farm families are Liberal regulations and carbon taxes. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business surveyed its members and asked for their top three priorities. Number one was to reduce the regulatory and red tape burden. Number two was to reduce the overall tax burden. For number three, 66% said their number one priority was to pass a Conservative bill to remove the carbon tax from on-farm fuels.
After eight years of the Prime Minister disrespecting this House and ignoring farmers, he is not worth the cost. Why is the Prime Minister working so hard to bankrupt farmers and disrespect this House? Why will he not axe his carbon tax?

Mr. Speaker, after eight years, farm families know that the Prime Minister is not worth the cost. A financial health report confirmed that higher Liberal inflation, taxes and interest rates are taking a serious toll on Canadian producers. Their net farm incomes are down 8%, but expenses are up 21%, the highest jump in 50 years, since the last tax-and-spend Trudeau government.
All parties in this House supported a Conservative bill to remove the carbon tax from on-farm fuels, but the Liberals are trying to kill that bill in the Senate. Will the Prime Minister respect the will of this House and axe his farm-killing carbon tax?

Mr. Speaker, ironically, the Liberals set aside $300 million for ACOA, for farmers to deal with Fiona, but not a single dime has gone out the door. All parties of the House supported this legislation. Even the Greens understand how important farming is.

Mr. Speaker, it is this simple: Higher taxes on farmers, on truckers and on processors mean higher food costs for Canadians. Canadian farmers will pay close to a billion dollars in carbon taxes alone by 2030. After eight years of the NDP-Liberal government, the Prime Minister is not worth the cost.
Conservatives are bringing forward common sense solutions, like legislation that would exempt the carbon tax from on-farm fuels like natural gas and propane, but the Liberals are trying to kill this bill at the Senate despite all-party support here in the House and in the Senate.

Mr. Speaker, after eight years of the Prime Minister's NDP government, Canadians cannot afford to put food on the table, and it is getting worse. The Parliamentary Budget Officer's report on Friday stated that by 2030, Canadian farmers will pay close to $1 billion in carbon taxes alone.
Lettuce is up 94% because of these increases in carbon taxes and the costs being put on farmers, processors and truckers, and it is Canadians who are paying the price at the grocery store shelves. Now the Liberals want to quadruple that tax.
How much will Canadians pay for a head of lettuce?

Mr. Speaker, the thing is, the Liberals can reduce the price of food right now if they abandon their failed carbon tax. However, instead of taking any meaningful action, they are having more meaningless meetings.
The price of diesel is already up 70¢ a litre, increasing the costs on farmers to produce the food, manufacturers to process it, truckers to haul it and certainly Canadians to buy it. When the price of lettuce is up 94%, clearly the Prime Minister's NDP government is not worth the cost.
Will the Prime Minister's big meetings reduce the cost of lettuce by Thanksgiving, yes or no?

Mr. Speaker, it is good to see that the minister is not denying that Canadian farmers are being punished with two carbon taxes. In fact, they are facing the highest inflation rates in 40 years. Nowhere is that more acute than with the price of food, which is already up 10%.
However, rather than offering support for Canadians, the Liberals are doubling down with a second carbon tax. What will that do? We are seeing forecasts that food prices will go up another 34% over the next two years, adding another $5,000 to the annual food costs of Canadians.
Again, when the government introduces a second carbon tax, how many farmers will go broke and how many Canadians will go hungry?

Food bank use is up a stunning 60%, with more than eight million Canadians using them every single month. This is before the knock-out blow of a second carbon tax.

That is not even the bad news. That does not include the implications of the Liberals' second carbon tax, a carbon tax that would add 61¢ a litre to the price of gas, which will increase the cost of food production and transportation.

Mr. Speaker, Canadians are out of money, and the Prime Minister is out of touch and often out of the country. While Canadians struggle to put food on the table and a roof over their heads, the Prime Minister has very different priorities. Here are the numbers that the Prime Minister is concerned about: $80,000 is the value of a trip paid for by Trudeau Foundation donors; 15 is the number of celebrities he met during the lavish trip to New York; and 45 is the number of selfies taken.
Thanks to the Liberal-NDP carbon tax coalition, here are the numbers that concern Canadians: zero is the number of emission targets hit; 41¢ is the increase in the price of gas per litre; $150,000 is the price an average farm family will have to pay thanks to the carbon tax; and 34% is the amount grocery prices are predicted to increase by 2030.
Canadians are living a nightmare and paying for the Prime Minister's authoritarian dream. A Conservative government will scrap the carbon tax scam, bring home powerful paycheques and ensure that the dreams of Canadians come first.

Mr. Speaker, if they really cared about the price of food, they would decrease the carbon tax because then Canadians would not need a grocery rebate.
A food professor, Dr. Sylvain Charlebois, said the grocery rebate is not going to help because it is the carbon tax and not climate change that is driving food inflation, and he is right. The Liberals' new spending in this year's budget would cost every Canadian $4,300 a year, and when the Liberals triple the carbon tax, it will cost Alberta families a net loss of $2,200 a year. How many families are going to have to go hungry before the Liberals realize that this is a mistake, and axe the carbon tax?

Mr. Speaker, what the Liberals are providing is increases in taxes. They have to understand there are very real consequences to those tax hikes, and Canadians are paying the price.
Pasta is up 23%. Lettuce is up 20%, and apples are up 16%. The Liberals want to drive food costs even higher by increasing the carbon tax on April 1. All this will do is drive more Canadians to the food bank. The Daily Bread Food Bank in Toronto saw its visits quadruple in March, and the staff at that food bank said the numbers they are seeing are startling and “horrific”.
Will the Prime Minister commit to no new taxes on Canadian families so they can afford to put food on their own tables?
