Bill S-236

44th Parl. 1st Sess.
June 13, 2023
  • This bill is about changing how employment insurance works in Prince Edward Island. It amends the Employment Insurance Act and Regulations to make Prince Edward Island one region for applying Parts I and VIII of the Act, despite the fact that it was previously split into two separate regions. This means that people in Prince Edward Island will now be treated as one group when it comes to employment insurance. The bill was introduced in the Senate of Canada in February 2022.

Bill S-251

44th Parl. 1st Sess.
June 13, 2023
  • Bill S-251 is a piece of legislation that seeks to repeal section 43 of the Criminal Code. Section 43, also known as the "correction of child by force" law, allows schoolteachers, parents, or anyone who acts in the place of a parent to use reasonable force to correct a child under their care. This bill intends to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's call to action number 6 by repealing this law. This would mean that using force to discipline a child would no longer be permitted, even if it is considered reasonable. The bill will come into effect on the 30th day after receiving royal assent.

Bill S-255

44th Parl. 1st Sess.
June 13, 2023
  • A proposed law in Canada would change the Criminal Code to make the murder of a partner or a child, either one's own or a partner's, automatically considered first degree murder. This means that such murders would be considered the most serious, regardless of whether the act was planned in advance or not. The bill was introduced in the Senate of Canada and can be found on their website.

  • The Canada Pharmacare Act sets out criteria and conditions that must be met by drug insurance plans established under the law of a province before a cash contribution may be made. The Act requires drug insurance plans to be administered on a non-profit basis in order to provide full coverage of the cost of all insured drugs prescribed by a health care practitioner and any related dispensing fees. Bill C-341

44th Parl. 1st Sess.
June 13, 2023
  • This bill is about making changes to the way public inquiries are conducted in Canada. The proposed change is that the people who run these inquiries, called commissioners, would be appointed after talking to leaders of every political party in the House of Commons and getting their approval. This would be done through a resolution passed by the House of Commons. The reasoning behind this is to ensure that the process is fair and transparent.
