  • The National Framework on Cancers Linked to Firefighting Act was passed in 2023 to create a national plan that will raise awareness of the cancers linked to firefighting and improve access for firefighters to cancer prevention and treatment. January is now recognized as Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month. The Act also mandates that the Minister of Health consult with provincial and territorial governments, municipalities, Indigenous governing bodies, health care professionals, scientists, and firefighting stakeholders to develop the national framework. The framework could include measures to promote research, data collection, information sharing, and regular screenings for cancers linked to firefighting. Reports on the framework's effectiveness and the state of cancer prevention and treatment must be prepared and tabled before Parliament every five years.

The strategy must include a study on the link between race, socio-economic status, and environmental risk, as well as measures that can be taken to advance environmental justice and assess, prevent, and address environmental racism. The Minister must consult or cooperate with interested persons, bodies, organizations, or communities to develop the strategy and ensure that it is consistent with the recognition and implementation of the rights of Indigenous peoples. The Minister must also prepare and table a report on the national strategy in Parliament every five years after its completion.

  • Canada has passed a new law called An Act respecting online communications platforms that make news content available to persons in Canada. The law regulates digital news intermediaries and aims to improve fairness in the Canadian digital news marketplace. The law establishes a framework where operators and news businesses can enter into agreements regarding news content that is made available by digital news intermediaries. It also takes into account principles of freedom of expression and journalistic independence. The law requires the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission to maintain a list of digital news intermediaries to which the law applies.
