Ukrainian Heritage Month Act

International Human Rights Act
  • This bill, called the International Human Rights Act, makes several changes to existing laws. It requires the Minister of Foreign Affairs to publish a report each year outlining Canada's efforts to promote human rights internationally, including actions taken to support prisoners of conscience. It also requires the Minister to respond to recommendations from parliamentary committees to impose sanctions on foreign nationals who have committed corrupt acts. The bill also prohibits issuing or renewing broadcasting licenses to undertakings that are vulnerable to foreign influence related to genocide or corruption sanctions. Finally, the bill amends the Prohibiting Cluster Munitions Act to restrict investments in entities that have contravened certain provisions of the act.

Improving Air Quality for Our Children Act, 2023
  • This Act is about improving air quality in schools and child care centers. It states that good ventilation and low levels of airborne illnesses can help children learn better and have fewer health issues. The Act requires every publicly-funded school and licensed child care provider to install carbon dioxide monitors in every room. These monitors must meet certain specifications and be installed correctly. The Act also sets a maximum threshold for carbon dioxide levels and requires schools and child care centers to report their levels to the Ministry of Education. The Ministry will publish this information on its website. The Act also requires the Ministry to develop an Air Quality Action Plan, which will include measures to be taken when carbon dioxide levels are high and guidance for addressing the issue. The Minister may also make regulations to enforce compliance with the Act. The Act will come into force three months after it receives Royal Assent. Its short title is the Improving Air Quality for Our Children Act, 2023.

Life Leases Act, 2023
  • The Life Leases Act, 2023 is a law in the Province of Ontario that regulates life leases. A life lease is a written tenancy agreement where a person pays an entrance fee in exchange for the right to occupy a rental unit for life or for a fixed term of at least 50 years. The Act applies to all life leases, tenants, landlords, and rental units, regardless of when they were entered into or came into existence. The Act includes provisions regarding payments and disclosure. Landlords are allowed to receive pre-lease payments and entrance fees, but there are limits on the amounts that can be charged. Landlords must disclose certain information to tenants before receiving any payments. The Act also requires landlords to maintain a reserve fund for unforeseen repairs or replacements in the residential complex. Landlords must also maintain insurance for the complex and hold meetings with tenants. The Act establishes rules for trustees who receive and administer entrance fees and refund funds. It also sets out offences and penalties for false or misleading statements and contraventions of the Act or regulations. The Act is set to come into force on a date to be determined by the Lieutenant Governor and is known as the Life Leases Act, 2023.
