An Act to amend the Pest Control Products Act (glyphosate)
  • Bill C-287 is a proposed law that aims to amend the Pest Control Products Act in Canada. The main change it proposes is to prohibit the manufacturing, possession, handling, storage, transportation, importation, distribution, or use of glyphosate as a pest control product. Glyphosate is a commonly used herbicide. If this bill becomes law, it would cancel the registration of products containing glyphosate. The proposed change would come into effect one year after the bill receives royal assent.

moved for leave to introduce Bill C-287, An Act to amend the Pest Control Products Act (glyphosate). She said: Madam Speaker, I rise today to reintroduce my private member's bill that aims to impose a complete ban on the use of glyphosate. My commitment to this issue remains the same. I want to thank my colleague from Madawaska—Restigouche for supporting this important bill, which will be beneficial for New Brunswickers. The widespread use of glyphosate in New Brunswick forests and across Canada is a menace to plant and wildlife biodiversity. There is a growing consensus that glyphosate is not safe to use and that there are more effective and safer alternatives. Rather than allowing toxic chemicals to be sprayed in Canada until they are proven harmful, we should be exercising greater precautions and banning products until they can be deemed safe. Canadians have the right to breathe clean air, drink safe water and harvest healthy food from the land. We have a duty to protect our ecosystems, habitats and wildlife. I want to thank the leadership of the tens of thousands of New Brunswickers who have fought for years for this ban to be implemented in the hope of ensuring safer communities and healthier forests for generations to come.

Madam Speaker, the next petition highlights the situation of the Hazara people in Afghanistan. This particular petition was certified prior to the Taliban takeover, and there were significant human rights concerns about the violence against the Hazara community in Afghanistan, which goes back a very long time. The Hazara community has experienced successive waves of violence. The situation is particularly dire now for the Hazara community, as well as for Sikhs, Hindus, Christians and other minority communities in Afghanistan. This petition, in particular, is calling on the government to formally recognize the 1891-93 ethnic cleansing perpetuated against the Hazaras as genocide and to designate September 25 as a Hazara genocide memorial day. The petition also supports Bill C-287 from the last Parliament, which aimed at ensuring development assistance was always contributing to the advancement of peace and security and focusing on the well-being of all individuals, including minority communities.

Madam Speaker, the next petition highlights the human rights situation of the Hazara community in Afghanistan. The petitioners are very concerned about an ongoing series of human rights abuses the Hazaras have experienced for centuries. Of course, this has become all that much more acute with the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. The petitioners want to see the government formally recognize the 1891 to 1893 ethnic cleansing perpetuated against the Hazaras as a genocide and to designate September 25 as Hazara genocide memorial day. They are also supportive of Bill C-287 from the last Parliament, aimed at ensuring all development assistance is contributed to peace and security of all people in all regions.
