SENATE OF CANADA |
BILL S-276 |
An Act respecting Ukrainian Heritage Month |
Whereas today Canada is home to more than 1.3 million Ukrainian-Canadians;
Whereas the first recorded arrival of Ukrainians to Canada took place in the month of September over 125 years ago;
Whereas the people of Canada and the people of Ukraine share strong bonds of friendship and commitment to the universal values of human rights, democracy and respect for international law;
Whereas Parliament recognizes the significant contributions that Ukrainian-Canadians have made and continue to make to Canada’s social, economic, political and cultural fabric, including artistic, linguistic, culinary, religious and folkloric contributions;
And whereas, by designating the month of September as Ukrainian Heritage Month, Parliament would provide an opportunity to remember, celebrate and educate future generations about the impactful role that Ukrainian-Canadians have played and continue to play in communities across the country;
Now, therefore, His Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:
1 This Act may be cited as the Ukrainian Heritage Month Act.
2 Throughout Canada, in each and every year, the month of September is to be known as “Ukrainian Heritage Month”.
